Painted the morning of the competition at First Brush of Spring 2019 plein air event in New Harmony, IN.
It's always a little scary when I enter a painting into a competition that I just painted. Time away from a piece is vitally important to me so I can make sure I'm seeing it with an objective eye to ensure there is nothing glaringly problematic that I may have missed, and that it holds up to scrutiny and I'm not just emotionally involved in the painting or the moment. But there was something special about this one. The colors are subtle and the gap between lights and darks narrow— and with the competition being held indoors due to the coming rains, I wasn't sure how it would display. I had painted a sunnier light and shadow painting which was nice and I'm proud of, but this one spoke to me. So I took the chance and put it into the competition.
And it paid off! Chris Leeper, the judge of the competition, honored me with a Merit Award, my third of the weekend from him. He also honored me with a Field to Finish Winner Award at the Field to Finish Exhibit and a Quick Paint Award at the Quick Paint. I am humbled by these acknowledgements.
